Vinyl siding is widely known to expand in warm weather and contract in the cold. This causes a popping sound that you can easily hear inside, and can even sound like the siding is being pulled off. To prevent it, hang your siding like this.
The popping sound from vinyl siding is due to the siding being nailed down too tight to the substrate. It will buckle when installed too tightly and pull against the wall and fasteners. If hung correctly, each piece of vinyl siding should shift at least a 1/4" in either direction. This will provide for natural movement of the siding as the weather changes.
Vinyl siding should be hung on nails at the center of the expansion slots. They may flap in the wind a bit, but they should stay attached. To repair siding that has been pinned too tightly against the wall you'll need a hammer, handsaw, and prybar.
