Start Off Strong at Your New Job by Looking for Quick Wins

When you start a new job, it’s easy to get excited about all the big, long-term stuff you want to take on. Unless specifically told otherwise, it’s probably better for you to look for opportunities to show your worth in a short amount of time.

You might have big ideas for making an impact at your new job, but those usually take time, and you want to look like a good choice right from your first day. Ximena Vengoechea at Fast Company suggests you show your value quickly by identifying opportunities for quick wins:

Ask yourself: What are areas of opportunity in which you can quickly make an impact? How can you make that impact visible? Are these areas in line with the company’s priorities? Are you equipped to succeed in taking on these tasks? ...opt for those that will be quick enough to execute and show immediate impact (think less than three months out). Make sure you align with your manager and are in a position to deliver on the quick wins you’re setting out to complete.

Quick wins not only show your value immediately, but they also help you build your confidence in a new position. Additionally, quick wins really give you a chance to learn the business you’re in before you start trying to make changes. Once your value is apparent, your confidence has grown, and the knowledge is there, you’ll be more prepared for bigger projects down the line.
