Use Repetition to Become More Persuasive

Repeating yourself can feel draining. However, if you want to be persuasive with your pitches, be prepared to say them over and over again. That repetition can be exactly what someone needs to internalize your ideas.

As business blog Entrepreneur points out, many of us believe that if someone doesn’t immediately latch onto our ideas when we say it the first time, we need to find different ways to say it, or come up with different ideas. While that’s not bad per se, we’re also programmed to think that something we’ve heard repeatedly is more important than something we’ve only heard once. Blame it on our propensity for pattern recognition. So, if you want your ideas to stand out, don’t be afraid to repeat them:

Many entrepreneurs mistakenly assume that their passion will cause their message to immediately stand out above the din of today’s information overload. In fact, most people today have developed filters to ignore unsolicited inputs until they have heard it several times in both written and verbal form.

Of course, saying the same thing over and over again shouldn’t be your only strategy. Repeating a bad idea ad nauseam is only likely to make you look dumb (or make you a successful politician). However, if you have a well-honed idea and you’re simply trying to market it better, get comfortable saying the same thing multiple times.
