Leave Kitchen and Bath Cabinet Doors Open to Prevent Water Pipes from Freezing

A tiny crack in a water pipe could be disastrous for your home, but it’s a preventable disaster if you follow a few precautions, such as opening your cabinet doors.

A quick drop in temperature, poor insulation, or your thermostat set too low could lead to frozen pipes, which could burst.

The graphic below from State Farm points out three things you can do during a to prevent this from happening. They’re a few of the same tips shared on Angie’s List, including this one:

During freezing weather, leave cabinet doors open under kitchen or bathroom sinks (especially if they are located against an outside wall) to allow warmer room air to circulate around pipes. You can also place a small lamp with an incandescent bulb near the pipes. Be sure to remove anything flammable from the area to prevent fires.

You might not need to do this if your home is consistently and well heated, but it’s something to keep in mind at least for those of you snow birds who close up their homes in the winter.
