Start Overcoming Your Shyness by Dumping Your Self-Image

Being shy isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if you’d like to overcome it, you have to start by ditching the labels and stigmas you’ve attached to yourself.

You might be a shy person, but it can be counter-productive to tell yourself that over and over in your mind. Alan Marsden from MindBodyandTech suggests you are what you think:

The very first thing you need to do (after not panicking) is to stop affirming your shyness. Stop telling yourself that you are shy or that you find gatherings awful. If we keep telling ourselves we are this or that, we will never overcome our feeling of fear or insecurity. And feelings can be overcome. Forget you have ever been shy.

You’re not a shy person that isn’t good at talking to others, you’re just a person that’s working toward conquering a fear. How could you ever hope to overcome something if you identify yourself with it? At that point, dissolving your shyness would mean changing who you are, and that’s not required to overcome fears. Lose your self-image, ditch the me/always/everything thinking, and gradually work your way to being more comfortable talking to others.
