Run on 45-Degree Days for Your Best Performance

The best temperature for a run is a cool, overcast 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Sound too cold? Maybe at first—but once you’ve warmed up, the cool air means you can dissipate heat more easily.

Runners turn in the fastest performances in races that are between the 40’s and the low 70’s—and studies suggest that the cooler end of that range is better. Here’s why: the cool weather means that it’s easier to keep your body from overheating.

Remember that your internal body temperature is 98.6 degrees, but you prefer to sit and watch TV in a 70 degree room; if the room were 98 degrees, there would be nowhere to put your excess heat. In a race, you’re working harder so you have more heat to dissipate; this means you need a cooler temperature still. (Think about how much you sweat while running on a 70 degree day—that’s your body trying to cool off.)

You may be chilly at the start (Pro tip: wear a jacket or garbage bag) but once you warm up, you’ll be at the perfect temperature. So don’t be afraid of signing up for a late fall or early spring race, and don’t shy away from going out for a run on a cool day. It might just be your best run yet.
