In-Store Pickup Isn't Always Faster than Shopping In Store

At a glance, it seems like the order online and pickup at the store option offered by many retailers should be faster than just going in and grabbing the item off the shelf for yourself. However, in an admittedly small study, StellaService found that many retails stores have about the same checkout time.

StellaService tested out in-store pickup at 11 retailers, including Best Buy, Home Depot, Macy's, and others. On average, in-store pickup took around five and half minutes in the store, while standard shoppers took about seven minutes. That does not account for the time spent looking for the item online, so total time for both was about the same.

Some retailers were worse than others though. Home Depot, Macy's, and Nordstrom were all faster if you just walked in and found the item on your own. In any case, it's a matter of minutes, and if you don't know the store, in-store pickup will always be faster. Still, it's an interesting look if you're just trying to shave some time off your day. Head over to StellaService for their full breakdown.
