When you’re selling your stuff in person—either through Craigslist or some other service—knowing how to detect a counterfeit bill can keep you from getting scammed. You may already know a few of these tricks, but some of these methods can help you spot the more subtle differences.
The last thing you want to do is trade your goods and services for next to nothing. This video from Tien Nguyen and the Ted-Ed YouTube channel explains the major security features of all US bills printed after 1996. Some of the subtle tells are that a real bill will have small red and blue fibers, the bill’s portrait has depth to make it look lifelike, and the space between each digit of the serial number is even. There also are pens you can buy that contain chemicals for detecting counterfeits, and if you have a black light, you can use it to spot a 1 mm wide strip of invisible ink. You can spot the strip by holding it up to daylight as well. The more methods you know, the more likely you’ll keep yourself from getting duped.
