Avoid Winter Storm Delays By Changing Your Midwest Flight For Free

A major winter storm is headed to the Midwest. If you happen to be there or traveling there, then that might potentially throw a wrench into your travel plans this weekend.

In anticipation of the storm, a number of airlines are offering travel waivers for people who are traveling to or from impacted areas or that might happen to have a layover in them. A travel waiver will allow you to change your flight to another time without having to pay the change fee.

If that’s you, and your travel plans are somewhat flexible, then you may want to consider changing your flights now. The idea here is that flights are likely to be heavily delayed or even canceled during the storm. Changing your flight before you leave for the airport can prevent you from spending the day in that airport only to discover you’re not going to fly anyway. In other words, you can save yourself some headaches if you just make the swap now.

Delta, United, and American are all offering waivers right now for travel today and tomorrow. Here’s a rundown of each offering:

Delta

Delta is offering travel waivers if you’re scheduled to fly between Dec 28-29th. With them, you can rebook your flight for travel by January 1st, or you can cancel the flight entirely for free and use the cash for a future flight.

Worth noting: Delta says when you start to go through this process it will initially look like you’re going to be charged a change fee, but that fee will be waived prior to checkout.

You can check out the full list of impacted cities here.

United

United is also offering travel waivers for flights set to take place between December 28-29th in impacted cities. In the case of those, you’ll need to rebook in the same cabin as your original ticket and your new flight will need to be between the same cities it was originally. The ticket you’re swapping also needs to have been purchased by December 26th.

You can see all of the cities impacted in United here.

American Airlines

American Airlines is offering a travel waiver for travel between December 28-29th, as long as you can travel by January 2nd. Tickets must be purchased for the same cabin as they were originally and include the same origin and destination city.

Tickets must have been purchased by December 27th in order to qualify. You can see the full list of cities here.
