Today, popular investment firm Scottrade announced a data breach that affects around 4.6 million of their customers. Any customer with an existing Scottrade account before February of 2014 may have had their contact information and Social Security numbers taken.
According to Scottrade’s announcement, the data breach took place over several months between late 2013 and early 2014. They believe the data that was accessed includes client names, street addresses, and other personal information. It’s possible that customer Social Security numbers were accessed as well, but they can’t say for certain yet. No client funds, or the trading platform itself, were touched or accessed. All client passwords were encrypted and there has been no sign yet of fraudulent activity.
Scottrade notes that contact information was the focus of the breach, and Brian Krebs at the KrebsOnSecurity blog suggests that the intruders are likely to use the information to facilitate stock scams. This probably just means an increase in spam for Scottrade customers, but hopefully not much else. If you believe you were affected by this data breach, however, Scottrade is offering a year’s worth of free credit monitoring service. Just call AllClear ID at (855) 229-0083. We’ll update this post if and when we get more information.
