PSA: Don’t Pack E-Cigarettes in Your Checked Luggage

If you use e-cigarettes, you’ll now need to put them in your carry-on instead of your checked bag when you travel. After over 26 fires and other incidents over the past two years related to e-cigarette batteries overheating in checked luggage, the US Department of Transportation has issued a ban on checking them.

In fact, the ruling also prohibits any battery powered portable electronic smoking devices including vaporizers, e-cigarettes, and e-cigars from checked luggage, and also includes a ban on charging them or their batteries on the plane. The Consumerist explains:

“We know from recent incidents that e-cigarettes in checked bags can catch fire during transport,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement. “Fire hazards in flight are particularly dangerous. Banning e-cigarettes from checked bags is a prudent safety measure.”

Passengers who own e-cigarettes can still bring them aboard aircraft in their carry-on bags, but, like traditional cigarettes, they can’t be used during flights.

According to the DOT, the 26 incidents recorded since 2009, often included devices that had been accidentally left on or that suffered a battery short-circuit.”

The new rule is set to take effect in two weeks (just before the beginning of the Thanksgiving travel season,) and applies to both passengers and crew.
