Over the last couple of years, services like Hipchat and Slack have become popular ways for companies and teams to manage their communications. Zulip is a completely free, open source alternative from Dropbox with a ton of features.
The service requires that someone on your team host their own server, which currently only runs on Ubuntu. If you can get over that hurdle, however, Zulip has clients for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS. You can add integrations with outside services, share files, customize notifications, and plenty more.
