At some point between now and December, you are going to need some pumpkin spice. (I’m talking about the blend, not the latte.) You could buy a jar of the pre-blended stuff or, since you probably have half of the ingredients in your cupboard already, you could make your own and save some cash.
Besides saving money, making your own allows you to customize your blend and spice up your life (and pies) to your exact specifications. For instance, the Pumpkin Pie Spice manufactured by McCormick is made from cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice, but your blend could be made more complex and sophisticated by the addition of cloves or mace (or both!).
Not sure where to start, ratio-wise? Try the recipe below from The Kitchn. You can then add or subtract spices to suit your unique pie needs and, once you find that perfect, spicy spot, scale it up with our nifty recipe calculator.
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon ground mace
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Finally, don’t be afraid to think outside the pie (or even the pumpkin!). This blend works just as well in savory autumnal dishes (think butternut squash risotto) as it does in pumpkin-flavored confectionery.
