Fight Procrastination by Facing Your Discomfort Head On

For many people, procrastination isn’t about being lazy, it’s about feeling uncomfortable with some aspect of the task at hand. Whatever the cause may be, it’s better to face your discomfort head on with a little honesty.

If you get a feeling of dread when you have a deadline, hiding from your work won’t make things any easier. Justin Rosenstein, co-founder of Asana, suggests on his LinkedIn blog that you stop hiding and find the true cause of your discomfort:

This is my greatest productivity hack, and my most valuable tool for moving from procrastination to focused action: (1) face each task head on, (2) be honest about why it’s uncomfortable, and (3) identify one easeful next step I can take to make progress against the goal.

Once you know why the task is causing discomfort, your dread becomes a real thing that you can take real action against. All you have to do next is take the easiest first step. Rosenstein also suggests that this strategy works even better when you have someone to talk through it with. Find a buddy and you can each help each other fight procrastination together.
