If you think you’re having a mental health issue, but don’t feel ready to find a therapist (or aren’t sure if your insurance will cover one), a good place to begin seeking help is with a support group or hotline.
Greatist has assembled a master list of mental health resources to fill in the gap between doing nothing and seeking professional help. They suggest using these resources instead of seeing a therapist, but we say: Why not both? Many of these groups can help you figure out whether you need professional help and how to seek it.
For example, there’s the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, several hotlines for GLBT folks facing difficult issues (including one specificially for youth), and hotlines for victims of crime and domestic violence.
The list has support groups for addiction, including secular ones like LifeRing that don’t follow the usual 12-step format. There are also support groups for grief, depression, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, to name just a few. Check out the link below for the full list, which also includes websites and apps that can help.
