The Amazon Dash button lets you place an order for a single, specific product. Stick the button anywhere you like and, when you run low, press the button, and an order is automatically shipped to you.

When Amazon first announced the Dash Button on March 31st, many assumed it was an April Fool’s joke. That turned out not to be the case, as some lucky people got to try them out during a trial period. Now, a select number of Dash Buttons are available to all Amazon Prime customers for $4.99 each and you can select from brands like Glad, Gatorade, Clorox, Maxwell House, Tide, Gillette, and Bounty. Each button is tied to a single brand and you’ll use a smartphone to connect the button to a specific product within that brand. Amazon claims they are in limited supply right now, so if you’ve been wanting one, now’s probably the time to order.

As we’ve mentioned before, there is a downside to this convenience, namely that a single-button order discourages comparing prices before you shop. And that’s true. You may be better off shopping around or at least using the Amazon Prime Pantry offerings instead. But if the convenience is worth it, and you’re already loyal to a brand, the Dash button is pretty handy. I got in on the early trial offer and use one to order laundry detergent. For some reason, that item never makes it to my shopping list because I just don’t think about it unless I’m in the laundry room. It’s super easy to just hit the button when I see I’m running low.

And hey, if you have a little of the DIY in you, it’s also worth mentioning that you can build your own Dash out of a Raspberry Pi and get a lot more control over what you order and how much you pay.
