The Jobs with the Biggest Pay Gaps for Women

The gender pay gap has been getting a lot attention. It's an issue needs to be addressed proactively, but it can be useful to know the industries where this gap is widest. Here are the worst paying jobs for women, based on median earnings.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2014 Current Population Survey to identify the "worst" paying jobs for women. These are the jobs with the biggest difference in percentage of women's earnings to men's. Here's their list, along with that percentage:

  1. Personal financial advisors: 61.3%

  2. Physicians and surgeons: 62.2%

  3. Securities, commodities, and financial service sales agents: 65.1%

  4. Financial managers: 67.4%

  5. Top executives: 70.0%

  6. Retail salespersons: 70.3%

  7. Human resource managers: 71.2%

  8. Bartenders: 72.4%

  9. Real estate brokers and sales agents: 73.3%

  10. Driver/sales workers and truck drivers: 73.7%

You can probably notice a few trends in this list yourself, but 24/7 Wall St. pointed out that women tend to be paid less overall in financial occupations and occupations in which they're the minority. They note:

How well-represented females are in a particular occupation's workforce is also a factor contributing to the pay gap. The occupations with the smallest pay gaps tend to have higher proportions of female workers. Alternatively, in six of the 10 occupations with the worst pay gaps, females were a minority of the workforce in 2014.

The findings compare the median weekly earnings of men and women who work at least 35 hours a week year-round. For more detail, check out 24/7 Wall St.'s full post.
