For all the rise of streaming has done to kill movie theaters and disrupt the entertainment world, I have to admit that I continue to be impressed by the weird stuff Netflix and its ilk spend their billions on. As audiences segment themselves ever further, content grows ever more niche, to the point that one of the world’s biggest streamer’s top offerings for February 2022 is an offbeat animated series based on a bizarre indie video game.
The Cuphead Show! (Feb. 18) apes the character designs (if not the charming retro animation) of Cuphead, a quirky 2017 run-and-gun shooter developed by Studio MDHR. A huge success by the standards of independently-produced games—having sold more than six million copies—it doesn’t strike me as any Hollywood producer’s first bet for a mainstream hit show, even though it’s remarkably well-suited to be one: Visually “inspired by the rubber hose style from the golden age of American animation” that began in the 1920s, its wacky character designs (that title describes the heroes quite literally) and frantic action mean it barely needs to be translated between mediums.
Still, some things seem to have been sacrificed in the move. While the game was painstaking hand-animated in the style of those vintage cartoon shorts, the show is produced via modern methods of computer-assisted animation, giving it a very different feel, despite the faithful character designs. Also, considering it’s debuting under the Netflix Family banner, I can only assume some of the sharper edges of the narrative—which involves a literal deal with the devil and a violent battle for the heroes’ lost souls—have been smudged a bit. Nevertheless, I’ll sample it with glee.
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month, including new episodes of Space Force (remember that? With Steve Carrell? May 2020 was so long ago) and Matt Groeing’s Disenchantment (Feb. 9), more reality relationship shenanigans on Love Is Blind—both original flavor (Feb. 11) and Love Is Blind Japan (Feb. 8)—a new Tyler Perry film starring Madea (Feb. 25), and, on Feb. 1, a new season of Gabby’s Dollhouse (that one’s for my kids).
