What's New on HBO Max in May 2021

Last summer, director Christopher Nolan had the hubris to think that Tenet was a movie people would risk their lives to see. The first major blockbuster to open in theaters following the start of the pandemic, it was also... the last major blockbuster to open in theaters, after it kinda bombed. But this month it is coming to HBO Max—dropping inauspiciously onto a streaming service like so many other would-be mega-hits of 2020. The circle is complete. Everything is still terrible.

Except Tenet, maybe? I haven’t seen it yet (as I have not been keen to sit in a theater at any point post-March 11, 2020). Certainly the reviews were all over the map; it’s either another brilliant mindfuck on the level of Inception, or an incomprehensible disaster. (Though speaking of incomprehensible, the muffled sound mix is one thing everyone seems to hate mutually.) I’m excited to watch and find out where I fall when it arrives on May 1; the only thing I know for sure right now is that Robert Pattinson looks good in those suits. And I have to appreciate his beauty, because Nolan doesn’t like to give women prominent roles in his movies. Yeah, I said it.

HBO Max’s big simultaneous streaming/theatrical release for the month is Those Who Wish Me Dead (May 14), the Angelina Jolie-fighting-wildfires movie with the artsy title and the fantastic trailer:

In other news, Adventure Time fans can enjoy the next installment of Distant Lands, that show’s sequel/coda miniseries, and fans of therapy will thrill at the surprise appearance of a fourth season of In Treatment, even though it features an entirely new cast and creative team. Plus, if you missed Wonder Woman 1984 during its brief streaming release window in December, it’s now coming back to join the rest of the DCEU in its permanent-ish streaming home.
