Get a Limited-Time Discount on New Amazon Gear by Trading in Your Old Tech

If you’re interested in one of Amazon’s many upcoming Alexa-powered devices, the company is running a limited-time trade-in offer that could knock a sizable chunk off the sticker price of its new Echos, Rings, and Fires TV, plus its latest Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers.

In addition to trade-in credit for the devices that you can use on any Amazon store purchases (though don’t get too excited there, as the rates aren’t exactly exceedingly generous—a working first generation Echo Dot will net you $5), Amazon will give you a coupon for up to 25% off when you trade in your older gear—including some non-Amazon products from Apple, Google, Roku, and more.

The specific discounts and bonuses differ based on what you’re trading in, its quality (non-working devices are accepted in most cases), and which of the new Amazon products you’re buying.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

Echo speakers

Echo speakers are being discounted most aggressively. If you trade-in one of the many eligible devices, in addition to your usual credit you’ll get a 25%-off coupon you can use on the new Echo (with or without clock), Echo Show, Echo Dot, and Echo Dot Kid’s edition. The discount is applied automatically at checkout.

G/O Media may get a commission

If you’re buying two of the new Echo speakers, you can use the ECHO2PK promo code to take $30 off the total. There’s a similar DOT2PACK promo code for $20 when buying two Echo Dot speakers. It’s doesn’t seem likely these offers can be combined with the discount code mentioned above. If you read the fine print, Amazon states the 25% discount, “may be used only once and may, in some limited cases, not be combined with other offers,” while the legalese for the buy-two promos indicates the deal “may not be combined with other offers, discounts or promotions (i.e., no promo stacking).”

If you have to pick, the 25% offer is the way to go—you’ll save an additional ~$5 to $10 on your two new Dots (depending on whether you want the clock or not) if you trade in two old ones, for example, versus the $20 off offer (not including the trade-in value). If you want to replace two old Echos, you’ll save an extra $20 over the buy-two discount.

Fire TV

On top of your normal trade-in credit, you’ll get a 20% off coupon on the new Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K and when you trade-in your older Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, or Roku devices. You’ll also get a bonus $0.99 credit that can be used on any of the digital movies, TV, music, and other streaming content available on Amazon. Don’t spend it all in one place.

Fire Tablets

Trade in your Amazon, Apple, or Samsung tablet—or even a TI calculator—and receive 20% off any of the current generation of Amazon Fire tablets.

Kindle

If you have an old Kindle or two laying around, send those suckers in for some store credit and a 20% coupon to put toward your next Kindle device.

Amazon home security

Amazon will take your old Ring, Blink, Wyze, Cloud Cam, Nest, or Arlo home security devices, give your store credit, then take an extra 20% off when you buy one of the new Ring devices.
