What's New on Netflix the Week of June 28, 2020

It took 26 years for someone to remake the 1984 horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, but in the Content Wars of 2020, no one can afford to let a property lie fallow for that long. Hence, this year delivers not one but two reboots of the 2002 Japanese thriller Ju-On: The Grudge, which you may remember as the other imported horror film featuring a little girl with stringy, wet black hair. (There was also a part where a hand came out of the back of someone’s head?)

In January, producer Sam Raimi delivered The Grudge, which I suppose is technically a reboot of, er, The Grudge, the 2004 Americanized remake of the 2002 Japanese original. For a copy of a copy, it was... apparently pretty bad actually.

J-horror fans will likely be much better served by Ju-On: Origins, a TV series prequel/remake/reboot featuring a Japanese cast, produced by Netflix Asia and premiering on the streamer worldwide on July 3. For a series dropping in less than a week, there is surprisingly little information about it online—it wasn’t announced until mid-May, it’s unclear from its IMDb page if franchise creator Takashi Shimizu is involved in any way and I can’t even figure out how many episodes there will be.

Still, we’ve got this pretty cool trailer, which includes all the series’ hallmarks, from hissing cats to cursed houses to people listening intently to tape recorders. Check it out below.
