Avoid Overeating at Holiday Feasts by Sticking With Homemade Food

This time of year, many us are going to those holiday parties and get-togethers. If you're trying to cut calories, avoid prepackaged foods at holiday parties.

Consumer Reports interviewed Brian Wasnink, author of Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life. He shared an easy tip to avoid some calories and still enjoy yourself:

"A really good rule of thumb: Don't eat it unless its homemade," Wansink said. "Thanksgiving isn't the day to go on a diet, but if you don't eat Aunt Grace's dressing, peach pie, or signature casserole, it'll hurt her feelings. But she won't care if you eat Chex mix, peanuts, or nachos out of a bag. She didn't make them. A typical person can cut calorie consumption by 9 percent if he simply avoids packaged or processed foods."

Wansink's referring to snacks before, but you can apply that to dessert, side dishes or even main courses. If you can eat the same thing somewhere else, skip it. Save room (and calories) for the unique offerings.
