The Most Affordable Big Cities in the U.S.

Maybe you enjoy living in a big city, but you're deterred by the expense. If you're looking for city living on a budget, check out Kiplinger's list of the most affordable ones across the U.S.

The site explains how they came up with their list:

We identified the 10 U.S. cities with populations above 250,000 that have the lowest living costs. Cheap living alone doesn't guarantee a good place to live; we also list household incomes, home values and unemployment rates for each of these cities…

Memphis was the most affordable, according to the list. The city has a cost of living that's 14.6% below the national average, and their median household income is $36,111. But it's worth noting that their median income is also below the national median income ($53,046). The full list of cities is below, but be sure to check out Kiplinger's slideshow for details on each area.

  1. Memphis, TN

  2. Columbus, OH

  3. Omaha, NE

  4. Nashville, TN

  5. Tulsa, OK

  6. San Antonio, TX

  7. Lexington, KY

  8. Lincoln, NE

  9. Oklahoma City, OK

  10. Louisville, KY
