With the deep freeze of winter on its way, now is the time to start preparing your home if you live in a colder climate. Frozen pipes can burst and cause nightmarish amounts of damage, but you can build an alarm that warns you of dangerous pipe-freezing temperatures.

Jason Poel Smith at Make has put together a step-by-step guide for the frozen pipe alarm over at Instructables, and it explains each step to building this anti-freeze setup. You'll need an Arduino Microcontroller, a Thermistor, an LED light, a Piezo Buzzer, and a few other common electronic parts. Some soldering is required, but it's minimal compared to other projects. Once you've calibrated the sensor and placed it near your pipes, you'll get a buzzer sound along with a flashing LED to let you know the temperature is getting dangerously low.
