Ask Kids What they Want as an Incentive Instead of Guessing

Sometimes we need to bribe kids to get them to do what we want. While we may be different on what we give as motivation, the best solution may be to ask the kids what they want.

Some kids want money, but you don't know until you ask. The Wall Street Journal examines what we pay our kids and how to encourage learning:

In picking the right incentive, it's also important that parents not just think in terms of material items or money. New privileges that come with each stage of growing up, for example, sometimes can be an appropriate incentive. Experts say turning such privileges into rewards can encourage the right kinds of behavior and increase a child's sense of self-accomplishment at the same time.

The experts also emphasize that mixing up the incentives helps kids learn as well. Parents don't always need to follow an exact pay-out schedule. Spontaneity with random rewards or extra incentives is still possible.

As kids get older and their priorities change, parents need to check in with the kids and adjust accordingly.
