If you attended high school in the 2010s, your experience didn’t exactly resemble on-screen depictions like The Breakfast Club, Mean Girls, or even High School Musical. There wasn’t that classic “status quo” pitting the jocks against the goths against the theater kids. For the past ten years, the rules and hierarchies of high school have looked a lot more like this “first day of school” scene from 2012's 21 Jump Street. To be cool, you have to be...a good person?
The shift in the rules of high school is in the foreground in Netflix comedy Senior Year (dropping May 13). Set between 1997 and 2017, the film stars Rebel Wilson as Ruby, an über-popular cheer captain who wakes up after a 20-year coma ready to win back her title as the most popular girl in school. But while she was comatose, high school changed. There’s no clear, climbable social ladder that separates “cheer captain” and “loser.” To be popular, Wilson’s character realizes, you need everyone to like you. All the time. (CUT TO: Instagram Live.) Wilson says that Senior Year is “like the wildly funny love child of Bring It On and Never Been Kissed.”
I’m looking forward to seeing how Senior Year holds up to other recent depictions of what high school is like for Gen Z. If one movie nailed the whole “the nice kids are the cool kids” thing, it was Booksmart. And if one TV show nailed it, it was American Vandal. (But that’s another essay for another time.)
Some other new titles this month stand out for their potential to thrill: Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive, a documentary following free diver Johanna Nordblad as she attempts to break the world record for distance traveled under ice with one breath; Cyber Hell: Exposing an Internet Horror, a documentary about the hunt to take down a South Korean network of online chat rooms that ran rampant with sex crimes; and Clark, a thriller based on controversial criminal who inspired the term “Stockholm syndrome.”
