Apple agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging the company falsely advertised its Powerbeats2 earphones as having a durable sweat and waterproof design. Per the terms of the settlement, Apple has to pay $9.2 million to back to customers, and it’s time for you to get your piece of the pie for your 2014-era earbuds.
Agreeing to pay the $9.2 million doesn’t mean Apple’s fessing up to any wrongdoing—Apple says it’s only settling to avoid the cost of going to court—but it does mean you could earn up to $189 per pair of Powerbeats2 earphones you purchased.
Only U.S. customers who bought their Powerbeats2 before August 7 are eligible for the payouts, which are calculated on a somewhat complicated points system. You can read the full explanation of the points system here, but here’s a simplified overview:
- If you submit a valid and properly-filled out claim form, you get one point.
- You’ll get two points for each valid proof of purchase.
- Each valid proof of warranty repairs/replacements are also worth two points.
The final point value depends on the number of claimants and how many points they all claim in total. For example, “if there are 150,000 points claimed, each Authorized Claimant will receive approximately $40.10 per point he or she claimed. If there are 300,000 points claimed, each Authorized Claimant will receive approximately $20.04 per point he or she claimed,” according to the settlement notice.
Regardless, payouts top out at $189 per proof of purchase. So if you bought multiple pairs of Powerbeats2 earphones and have valid proofs of purchase and repairs for each, you could earn even more than $189.
Luckily, users don’t need to worry about calculating their points themselves; you just need to fill out the form and provide any proof of purchases and/or receipts for repairs or replacements. Go here to submit the claim form electronically, or to download one you can print and fill out by hand. Electronic claim forms must be submitted by November 20, and mailed forms need to be postmarked before November 20. You should receive your money sometime in 2021, after the fairness hearing takes place on January 21.
