This week’s most significant new additions to Netflix give you a choice between diving into the tumultuous past and staring headlong into the present. It’s hard to say which offers the more upsetting vision of the world. Just kidding, it’s the latter option.
Let’s get the fun, light-hearted one out of the way first: The streaming services original superhero series The Umbrella Academy returns for its second season on Friday, July 31, with a plot that takes a sharp turn into temporal mayhem as the unusually gifted kids in the Hargreeves travel back in time to avoid one apocalypse and encounter another. They all arrive (separately) in Dallas between the years 1960 and 1963, where they will impact the timeline involving the Kennedy assassination and possibly cause a whole different end-of-the-world scenario.
A few days earlier will see the premiere of another “Netflix Original,” the Polish film festival award-winner The Hater, directed by Jan Komasa. The plot follows Tomasz, a law school failure who gets a job at a shady PR firm and discovers his new job involves weaponizing the internet: organizing smear campaigns, seeding fake news and generally making the world less safe for democracy. What’s worse, instead of being appalled, Tomasz finds he’s very good at it. It’s the kind of dystopian cautionary tale I used to like, back before they were cautionary tales and we didn’t live in a dystopia.
