3-Ingredient Happy Hour: A Morning Martini

Happy weekend, and welcome back to 3-Ingredient Happy Hour, the weekly drink column featuring super simple yet delicious libations. This week I want to talk morning beverages, specifically morning gin.

I have never been one to clutch my pearls over before-noon imbibing, but some drinks seem more AM-appropriate than others. I love a martini, but sipping gin and vermouth before I’ve had my coffee is a little rough, even for me. There’s an elegant solution for this conundrum though: just soften the spirit up a bit with a breakfast-y item, in this case, marmalade.

Bartender Salvatore Calabrese of the Lanesborough uses the tangy and sweet power of orange marmalade to round out his morning gin, but his recipe has a few too many ingredients for our purposes. I dropped the Curaçao to streamline the brunch-y beverage, but I also swapped out the standard orange marmalade for some peach-mango to make it a more summery sipping experience. (If you can’t find peach and mango in one jar, just pick your favorite; either one will work.) To make this rise-and-shine cocktail, you will need:

  • 3 generous bar spoons of peach-mango marmalade
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 2 ounces gin

Add marmalade and lemon juice to the bottom of an empty cocktail shaker and stir until marmalade dissolves. Add gin and fill shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a coupe or martini glass. Sip and start your day off delightfully.
