Sure, the toy itself is cool, but half the fun of a Hatchimal is the surprise. This tutorial shows you how to make your own version of a “Hatchimal” with papier mache. Your kids will know the difference, but it’s a fun project nonetheless.

The tutorial is basically a big papier mache egg that you can fill with just about anything, but the host shows you how to make a knockoff Hatchimal. You make your papier mache mix out of flour, salt and water, then use cut magazine strips to cover a blown up balloon. Once it all dries, you can cut the egg, then start decorating.

The host uses beanie babies to make the end product resemble an actual Hatchimal, but you could use any surprise, really. It’s obviously not the real deal, but it might be a fun DIY project for party favors, presents, or just something to do with your kids on a Sunday afternoon.
