If you use a smartphone as an alarm clock, you probably just have it sitting awkwardly on a bedside table, the power cable dangling off, ready to wake you up not by the tone, but by the awful vibration sounds. If you’d prefer the look of an actual clock, Instructables user vincent.verheggen shows you how to build one.
The clock here houses a speaker and an amplifier, so when you plug in the phone, it’ll wake you up with a much more pleasant tone than what your smartphone’s speaker emits. It’s also set up so you can use it with your current phone or just repurpose an old one. You’ll need access to a laser cutter to get the same perfect cuts he has, but a hackerspace or external company can handle that easily. From there, you just need to assemble it. It’s a pretty fun and cheap project by the end, plus you’ll get to appreciate your DIY spirit every morning when you wake up.
