Cut Transportation Costs on Your Next Vacation With a Cheap, Used Bike

Flights and lodging make up a big part of one's travel budget. But once you reach your destination, transportation costs can add up, too. Rather than rent a car or pay for cabs, consider buying a cheap, used bike to get around town.

This fun tip comes from frugal expert Jeff Yeager:

...when I fly someplace where I plan to stay for at least a few days, one of my first stops is at a local thrift store to pick up an inexpensive used bike. I can’t even begin to calculate how much this has saved me in taxi fares, car rentals, and even public transportation over the years. Plus, it’s a great way to get to see and know a place, while squeezing in a little workout at the same time.

Before heading home, Yeager either donates the bike for a tax deduction or gives it away to make someone's day.

Of course, your mileage will vary with this tip. You might not be able to find a cheap bike at any thrift shops, for example. And, of course, if you do, you’re also sacrificing the convenience of driving. Not every city is completely bike-friendly, so this tip will work better in some places than others.

There are some obvious considerations, but it's a fun and frugal possibility for your next vacation.
