Whether you’re looking for a gift for dad or are just in it for the bargains, Father’s Day is one of the best times to find deals on tools. A careful shopper will notice that many “Father’s Day” deals actually extend through June, and some even into July. While you can certainly save on the perfect gift for the handy dad in your life right now, you can also give yourself a gift by shopping the best tool sales of the year.

The best cordless tool deals

If you’re looking for battery-operated tools (and who isn’t), check out the deal offered at Home Depot on both Ryobi and Milwaukee batteries. When you buy a set of batteries and a charger, you get to pick one of a wide variety of cordless tools, from work lights to saws, for free. You can also find a half-off deal on a complete Milwaukee starter kit that comes with seven tools, including a drill, impact driver, reciprocating and circular saws, as well as two batteries and a charger. The sale price brings the cost from $999 down to $499. And at Ace Hardware, you can score a Dewalt battery for free when you buy a cordless sander or one of three select saws. You can also get a free battery when you buy a Milwaukee hedge trimmer or pruning saw.

The best deals on bits

Bits and accessories to go with your cordless tools are on sale for Father’s Day too. Home Depot has a variety of Milwaukee drill bit sets on sale for between 40% and 64% off; Lowe’s has Spyder brand hole saw bits on sale for $40 off.

The best hand tool deals

For hand tools, check out Lowe’s for a great deal on a Craftsman socket and wrench set with both metric and imperial allen keys, a ratchet set, and box wrenches for $99 (regularly $220); they also have a good deal on a slightly smaller mechanic’s hand tool set for $69. Shop Ace Hardware for deals on smaller sets and single-tool hand tools, with a Crescent brand adjustable wrench set at $24.99 down from $64.99; two-piece Stanley pliers set for $6.99; and a Craftsman fold-out allen key set for $6.99.

The best deals on measuring and marking tools

Measuring and marking tools are also on sale, with a good deal on a Milwaukee Torpedo level at Home Depot for $31.97, saving you 40%; a Stanley tape measure with a nifty write-on feature that allows you to write down measurements on the side of the tool with a pencil at Ace for $6.99; and a Bosch 30-foot laser level at Lowe’s for $49, on sale from $69. You can never have too many levels or too many tape measures (and neither can dad).

What else you need to know about deals for dad

When you’re perusing the sales, it’s always a good idea to check for sales that are specific to the day you’re shopping as well as any coupon and rebate offers. Sometimes you can stack deals to get a real steal. Also, keep in mind that if the dad (or whoever) you’re shopping for has a specific battery set already, it’s a good idea to stay on brand with any tools and batteries so everything is interchangeable. It’s also important to note that there are some tools that come with batteries and some without, so look for what’s included on the package to determine what kind of a deal you’re really getting—it won’t be a deal if you can’t use the tool when you get it home.
