Last year over 50 million Americans received some form of stimulus check from their states. While these payment amounts weren’t as large as the federal stimulus checks for 2021 pandemic relief, they certainly made a difference for families getting slammed by inflation.
If you’re an eligible taxpayer in one of the states that sent one-time rebate checks or other relief payments, you should have seen that money by now. If not, you’ll want to figure out what went wrong so you can see that check. The issue may be as simple as an out-of-date address, or maybe your 2021 return wasn’t filed correctly Here are all the states that issued relief checks in 2022, so you can double-check that you qualified and then track down your missing payment.
Alaska
The Alaska Department of Revenue began issuing checks of $3,284 in Sept. 20, 2022, but some are still on their way to eligible residents. You can check the status of your payment here.
California
Over 31 million Californians received inflation relief checks of up to $1,050, depending on their filing status. This online tool gives you an estimate of your payment amount based on your income, filing status, and whether you have dependents.
If you believe you are eligible and did not receive a payment by Feb. 14, 2023, call California Franchise Tax Board customer support at 800-542-9332.
Colorado
State residents who have filed their 2021 return by June 30 should have gotten a physical check for $750 by Sept. 30. Filers who received an extension and filed by the Oct. 17 deadline were supposed to receive their refund by Jan. 31, 2023.
To check on your Colorado Cash Back rebate visit the Colorado Department of Taxation website or call 303-951-4996.
Connecticut
Applications for the Child Tax Rebate were due July 31, 2022; the state started sending payments in late August. Unfortunately, if you missed the deadline last summer, you’re out of luck now.
Delaware
A $300 stimulus check started going out in May 2022 for residents who filed 2020 taxes. If you have questions about the status of your rebate, visit the Delaware Department of Finance website.

- Recipient of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) assistance
- Relative caregiver
- Non-relative caregiver
If you didn’t receive a check and think that you should have, you can check with the Florida Department of Children and Families or call 850-300-HOPE.
Georgia
By May 2022, residents who filed both a 2020 and 2021 Georgia income tax return should have received these check amounts based on their filing status: up to $250 for single filers and married people filing separately from their spouse, $375 for head-of-household filers, and $500 for married couples filing a joint return.
Most residents who filed their 2021 state return by April 18, 2022 should have received their payment by early August. If you’re still waiting, visit the Department of Revenue website. You can also check the status of your state income tax refund here.
Hawaii
Residents of at least nine months who filed a 2021 Hawaii income tax return for the 2021 tax year should have received between $100 to $300 per family member. You didn’t qualify if you (1) were claimed as a dependent on another person’s federal or Hawaii tax return, or (2) are a convicted felon in prison, or (3) were convicted of a misdemeanor and were in jail for all of 2021.
Direct deposits began being issued in late August, but physical checks didn’t go out until the week of Oct. 17, 2022. For more information, visit the Hawaii Department of Taxation website or call 808-587-4242.
Idaho
Residents who filed 2020 and 2021 Idaho income tax returns by the end of 2022 qualify for the payments. Two rounds of payments went out in March and September 2022. You can track your rebate payments with Idaho Tax Commission’s online tool.
Illinois
Checks of up to $300 started going out to qualified Illinois residents in September 2022. You qualified for an income tax rebate if the adjusted gross income on your 2021 Illinois tax return was under $200,000 (under $400,000 for joint filers). Separately, you qualified for a property tax rebate if you paid Illinois property taxes in 2021 on your primary residence in 2020, and the adjusted gross income on your 2021 Illinois tax return was $250,000 or less ($500,000 or less for joint filers).
You can check the status of your payment at MyTax Illinois’ Where’s My Refund page. More information is available on the Illinois Department of Revenue website.
Indiana
First-round rebates of $125 started going out in May 2022, and a second round of payments of $200 should have been delivered by the end of October.
For the first refund, you had to file a 2020 Indiana resident tax return by Jan. 3, 2022. If you qualified for that first Automatic Taxpayer Refund (ATR), you qualified for the second. But if you didn’t qualify for the first, you still could have gotten the second if you (1) received Social Security benefits in 2022, and (2) weren’t claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s tax return.
Indiana residents who didn’t receive a rebate should contact the state’s Department of Revenue.
Maine
Maine taxpayers who filed their 2021 state tax returns and have an adjusted gross income of less than $100,000 were eligible for an $850 direct relief payment in 2022. Couples filing jointly should have received a single payment of $1,700.
Checks were sent out July 2022. You can track your rebate payments with the Maine Revenue Services’ online tool.
Massachusetts
If you filed your 2021 state tax return after Oct. 17, 2022, you should have received your refunds approximately one to two months after your file date. The refund was equal to approximately 14% of an individual’s 2021 state income tax liability.
Use this website to get an estimate of your refund. A call center is also available at 877-677-9727.
