If you plan to itemize your deductions, the IRS has a document that lists which medical and dental expenses do and don’t qualify. Some common ones include:

  • Birth control pills
  • Breast pumps and supplies
  • Medical equipment installation or home improvements you’ve paid for that aid in medical care for you, your spouse, or your dependents
  • Eye exams, eyeglasses, and contacts
  • Weight-loss programs prescribed by a doctor as treatment for a specific disease (this doesn’t include gym, spa, health club dues, or special food)
  • Dental treatments that prevent (like teeth cleanings) or alleviate (like fillings) dental disease
  • Therapy, as long as it is part of medical treatment
  • Smoking cessation programs (but not supplies, so items like nicotine gum or patches aren’t included)
  • Wheelchairs

These are only a few of many tax-deductible expenses, so check out the full list to see if anything you purchased this year qualifies, or make a last minute appointment or stop at the pharmacy. Even if you have no qualifying expenses this year, you’ll know which upcoming purchases you can deduct in the future.
