Winter Is the Best Time to Clean Out Your Fridge and Freezer

Cleaning your freezer is typically a spring activity, along with cleaning the rest of the house. However, you need to remove the stuff from the freezer to clean it. Keeping all that stuff safe is a whole lot easier when it's cold outside.

The Kitchn reminds us that it makes more sense to do this cleanup when it's below freezing:

Pick a below-freezing day to clean out your freezer, and you can just stick all the frozen goods on your patio, porch, or in the backyard while you clean. No more loading up a cooler with ice to keep things from defrosting, or rushing through the task so you can stuff everything back in. You may not like winter, but in this case, it can really work in your favor.

You can't always predict which days will be the coldest or how the temperature might rise to above freezing. I'd suggest still using coolers and other protection for your food. Keep the food out of the sun and make sure it's well below zero outside. Doing the cleanup when it's cold and putting the food outside might give you more time to do a more thorough cleaning. Follow food safety guidelines to make sure stuff is still safe to eat.
