Consider Your Boss's Position When You're Upset at Work

Often, your boss has to take the blame for a decision that was handed down to them from their superiors, or otherwise wasn't meant personally. Consider his or her position and try to see the bigger picture before you get too upset.

I often deliver this advice to friends who haven't been in management. Your boss may make a decision that affects you personally, but that doesn't mean that they're being inconsiderate. While it's important to protect your interests, try thinking about your boss's position and show empathy to the strains they might have to endure.

If the decision affects you that much, there's nothing wrong with setting an appointment with your boss to discuss it and try to work out an alternative solution. However, during that discussion make sure you lead with understanding that there are differences in your positions and priorities, and ask if, with that in mind, your boss can find any room to understand your position and find middle ground.
