“Promotional Gift Cards” May Have More Restrictions Than OtherCards

If you gave gift cards this holiday season, you might have received a promotional gift card as an extra gift. For example, perhaps a store had a promotion where you bought $100 in gift cards and got an extra $25 gift card. That promotional card may not follow the same gift card rules for expiration and value.

Forbes shares a few tips on gift cards and reminds us these "promotional cards" might expire in just a few weeks, or have other restrictions. They're more like a coupon than a typical gift certificate, even if they don't require an initial purchase to use. Since you didn't pay for them, gift card rules won't apply, and it may lose value if it goes unused.

Check out the back of the card and read the fine print. If the card expires, mark it on your calendar with a reminder a few days before its value is gone.
