If your weekend (or weekday) breakfasts typically involve waffles or pancakes made using a mix (no judgement here), you may want to reconsider your menu. That’s because certain buttermilk pancake and waffle mixes sold in Kroger and Walmart locations across the country are being recalled “due to a potential foreign material contamination,” the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports. Here’s what to know.
Why the pancake and waffle mixes are being recalled
All of the recalled products were manufactured by Continental Mills, and the buttermilk pancake and waffle mixes in question were sold under both the Kroger and Walmart store brands (Kroger and Great Value, respectively).
The manufacturer issued the recall after fragments from a cable used to clear the processing line were discovered in some of the pancake and waffle mixes. Thus far, no consumers have reported finding pieces of cable in the products, and there is no indication of related illnesses or injuries.

What to do if you’ve purchased the recalled products
If you’ve recently purchased any of the pancake and waffle mixes noted above—from either retailer—do not eat them. The FDA advises throwing away the product, then calling the Recall Phone Hotline at 1-800-578-7832 (Monday – Friday, from 10 am. to 7 p.m. EST) for a refund, or more information. The Great Value mix can also be returned to a Walmart retailer for a refund or replacement.
