What's New on HBO Max in June 2021

The last movie I saw in theaters before the pandemic turned moviegoing into a hazy memory was Cats, the infamously wrong-headed adaptation of the inexplicably popular Broadway musical. That it was a late-night “rowdy” screening hosted by a popular bad movie podcast only made me feel a little less unclean.

How appropriate, then, that my first movie back—and fully vaxxed—might be a much better musical: the long-delayed adaptation of Hamilton impresario Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2008 Tony-winner In the Heights, which all reports indicate has been vividly brought to the screen by John M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians). It’s either that, or watch it on HBO Max when it drops on streaming on the same day, June 11.

Yes, for a year I’ve been hoping for a chance to ugly cry in the theater during this movie—even the trailer, which, come to think of it, played before Cats, put a lump in my throat—but it turns out that after 15 months of devouring new releases on-demand from home, I perhaps don’t feel as ready to sit in a darkened theater with strangers as I thought I would. I’m not scared of getting sick, and I’m not anti-the science of vaccines; I think I just forgot what joy feels like. Maybe this musical chronicle of the vibrant lives of the residents of Washington Heights will remind me.

In the meantime, there’s lots more new content on HBO Max doing its part to keep me at home in June, including another simultaneous theatrical/streaming premiere for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 4); the streaming premiere of Kajillionaire, the latest film from indie weirdo Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know); and the return to HBO Max of January’s serial killer thriller The Little Things, featuring a tired-looking Denzel Washington and a Jared Leto performance that is either brilliant (he got a Golden Globe nomination) or terrible (if you ask anyone other than the Hollywood Foreign Press Association).
