Peloton has issued a voluntary recall along with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for their flagship product, the Original Peloton Bike, after reports of dozens of riders falling and being injured. About 2.2 million of the bikes are being flagged, and the company is urging customers not to ride them because of the potential for the seat to break while in use.

According to the recall, the seat post on the bike can break unexpectedly while being used and create a fall and injury risk. As of April 30, 35 people have reported a fall to Peloton and the CPSC. Thirteen of those people have suffered injuries, including a wrist fracture, lacerations, and bruises.

Which Peloton is being recalled?

The recall affects all original Peloton model Bikes sold from January 2018 to May 2023 in the United States. You can identify if your Peloton is one of the recalled ones if it has the “PL-01" model number label on the inside front fork by the flywheel. It will also have the red “P” logo followed by the white-colored Peloton brand name on the bike’s frame. You can see an image of the recalled Peloton here.

If you have an Original Peloton Bike model originally sold outside of the U.S., a North America Bike+ or an international Bike+, you are not affected by this recall.

What to do if you have a recalled Peloton

The CSPC urges all Original Peloton Bike model owners to stop using the bike until they have completed a replacement for the seat post.

Peloton is offering free seat post replacements to owners, even if you bought the Peloton second-hand (as long as you register the Peloton under your email)—you can start to order your replacement seat post here. The website was giving some users an error message on Thursday morning, but it appears to be working now. The new seat post can be “easily installed at home,” according to Peloton; you can watch this video that explains how to install the new seat post.

If you have questions about the recall, call Peloton’s member support team at 866-679-9129 from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET, seven days a week or go online and click on “Product Recalls” at the bottom of the page.
