"If You're Learning Piano, You Don't Give Up Because You Miss a Note"

With the start of a brand new year it's a great time to take on new challenges, resolutions, and goals, but there will be missteps along the way. It's important to remind yourself as you pursue success that a mistake isn't a reason to waiver, it's a reason to continue.

The drive you need to accomplish whatever you're attempting—big or small—needs fuel. Instead of letting slip-ups set you back, psychologist and author John Norcross recommends you make them the fuel:

"If you are learning to play the piano, you don't give up because you miss a note. It's not whether you slip, it's how you respond to the slip."

Cut yourself some slack and remember that things take time and hard work. Listen to the sound of your "missed note" and let that push you forward. You missed that note yesterday, but that doesn't mean you'll miss it today.

Contacts Pics+ Finds and Adds Pictures to iOS Contacts

iPhone: The Contacts app on the iPhone can get linked up to Facebook or your address book to pull images from, but that's it. Contact Pics+ is a simple little app that digs through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google Image Search, and more to find images.

Once you connect Contact Pics+ to the services above, you can browse through them and pick out an image that you like for their contact image. That will then show up in the Contacts app or up above in the recents menu. It's kind of a one-time use app that you'll only need if you're bent on making sure every contact has an image, but it's helpful nonetheless to fill in the gaps that Facebook leaves.

Elevate Gives You Daily Brain Games to Exercise Your Mind

Android/iOS: We've discussed plenty of times why it's important to exercise your brain every day. If you're not sure where to start, Elevate can give you a boost by presenting you with different brain challenges every day.

The app will offer a rotating set of three games every day, each one targeted to specific brain functions like memory or math. You can pay to unlock more games if you're really into it, but you can keep practicing each of the three games as many times as you want each day until the set cycles out. It will also keep track of your progress each day so you can see how your scores match up, which can be helpful if you want to compare things like your performance in the morning to the afternoon on different days.

Choose an Uncomfortable Seat to Stay Awake in Meetings

We all know how rough it is to stay awake in a boring meeting, whether it's a big company-wide event or just a small team discussion that's just a little too long. Find a seat where you have to support your weight a bit—that'll keep you on your toes, and get your attention focused on comfort instead of fighting to keep your eyes open.

Whether you're sitting on the edge of your chair, or you choose to sit in a chair that's not quite level, pick probably the most uncomfortable seat you can find for the duration of the meeting. Choose carefully—if the meeting is going to be several hours, you may not want to be painfully uncomfortable the whole time, but adding a little discomfort to the mix, especially for a shorter get-together, will keep you awake—and keep your boss or the person presenting from looking over the attendees only to see you struggling to keep your eyes open.
