Outside of the 2007 indie hit Waitress, Keri Russell has never had the movie career she obviously deserved—no, a small part in Mission: Impossible III, and a laughable cameo in the worst Star Wars movie (I said it) don’t cut it, and no one is going to Cocaine Bear to see anything but the bear who ate the cocaine. Luckily, TV continues to adores her, and come April, she’ll be settling into her first series lead role since The Americans ended in 2018 when Netflix launches the political drama The Diplomat (but she’ll always be Felicity to me).
From series creator Debora Cahn (Fosse/Verdon, Homeland) the show follows Russell’s Kate Wyler, a mid-level career diplomat whose life is turned sideways when she is named the U.S. ambassador to the U.K.—just in time to be thrown into the middle of a global political crisis. Guess the April 20 premiere date is a red herring.
In other ‘90s throwback news, the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers crew (some of them, anyway—whither former Felicity costar Amy Jo Johnson?) reunite to fight off a resurgent Rita Repulsa in the nostalgia-fest Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always (April 19), which actually looks...pretty good? I mean, as far as these things go.
Also notable: Florida Man (April 13), a new series from the makers of Ozark about a disgraced cop who returns to his Florida roots in search of a mobster’s girlfriend and finds trouble instead, because Florida; and Chimp Empire, a new documentary from the Oscar-winning team behind My Octopus Teacher, arrives April 19.
