What's New on Disney+ in February 2022

Two days ago, Disney dropped the trailer for Moon Knight, the next in a line of streaming series set on the ever-expanding fringes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, the show looks intriguing, suggesting a darker edge than much of the post-Netflix era of MCU TV. Unfortunately, it doesn’t premiere until March 30, which means you’re going to need to survive a month without a new superhero show.

You and Disney+ both—for the past year, the steamer has kept pop culture hooked on a steady drip of appointment TV, from The Mandalorian, to The Book of Boba Fett, to WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye. And while the content (because that’s what this stuff is, first and foremost) is usually better than decent, the strategy behind its rollout has been near flawless; rarely do more than a few weeks pass without a new episode tied to one of these mega-franchises arriving on our smart TVs and injecting itself into Twitter’s trending topics.

While the gap between the end of The Book of Boba Fett on Feb. 9 and the launch of Moon Knight on March 30 is but a brief interlude in the grand scheme of all-consuming IP, it illustrates how dependent Disney+ is on these brands. Because without them, the most it has to tout for February is a revival of a 20-year-old animated series.

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder (Feb. 23) is a diverse cartoon sitcom following African-American teenager Penny Proud and her family as they navigate daily life. It picks up where the original series, which concluded its run in 2005, left off, but also sounds very 2022: Returning producer Ralph Farquhar promises it will forefront issues of race and identity (new characters include a family headed by gay co-parents). “A lot has changed in 20 years,” he said at a TCA panel last week. “Before, we used to have to tiptoe and used coded language. Now we can go straight at it.”

Other than that, the only thing you’re really getting for your subscription dollars this month is the streaming debut of Free Guy, the super meta 2021 box office hit in which Ryan Reynolds plays a working stiff who learns he is a background character in a video game and decides to take control of his destiny. The well-reviewed comedy-action flick arrives on the service on Feb. 23.
