Pop quiz! Will you walk, bathed in an otherworldly glow, into the light, or will you crawl on all fours to the dark side? This is the question Netflix is posing this week as it offers you only two viable streaming options.
If you choose the light, you’ll watch Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings (Friday), an extremely family-friendly anthology series in which each of the eight episodes is based on a Parton hit. This looks treacly beyond my sweet tooth, but I do love Dolly (you’re listening to the podcast, right?) and one episode (“Sugar Hill”) reunites Timothy Busfield and Patricia Wettig—that’s right, Elliott and Nancy from the does-not-hold-up-at-all ‘80s drama that I loved at the time even though I was only 14, thirtysomething.
Should you join me on the dark side, we’ll marinate together in Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator (Wednesday). I listened to that 30 for 30 podcast about the notorious hot-yoga monster, and I will be devouring the documentary. I have of late become slightly concerned about my appetite for crime documentaries highbrow and low (ask me about literally any episode of 48 Hours), but I’m comforted by the bumper crop of podcasts and movies and magazine stories indicating that the entire world seems to share my curiosity in charlatans, con men and murderers.
