Today's Your Only Chance to Save $32 on a Year of Amazon Prime

Today's Your Only Chance to Save $32 on a Year of Amazon Prime

To celebrate Transparent’s five wins at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards, Amazon is selling Prime subscriptions for just $67, today only. That’s $32 less than usual, and the best deal they’ve ever offered on their marquee (and increasingly prolific) service.

If you don’t have Prime yet, this is a no-brainer. Just head over here, and sign up! If you’re already a Prime member though, things aren’t quite that simple. In the past, there’s been a loophole that involved buying a gift membership, disabling auto-renew on your account, and “gifting” it to yourself on your renewal date to add a new year to your account. We think that will still basically work, but it seems like Amazon’s put up some obstacles this time that might make it more trouble than it’s worth.

We’re still trying to figure out all the details (leave some comments with your experiences!), but it seems like Amazon’s removed the ability to disable auto-renew on Prime memberships; your only option now is to cancel the service immediately. Of course, you could set a calendar reminder to do just that, and then use this discounted gift membership to add another year, but since your membership would technically lapse, you would lose your grandfathered family sharing abilities, as well as any files you have stored in Prime Photos. I won’t tell you not to try it, but be aware of the pitfalls, and caveat emptor.

Of course, Prime’s a great gift to give to other people too, and this is an awesome chance to knock out some of your holiday shopping early. Just buy up a handful of discounted memberships, and stockpile them for friends and family later. Prime is the best deal in tech after all, even at full price, so you should definitely find some way to take advantage of this deal, even if it’s for the benefit of others. [Amazon Prime, $67]
