We all expect that we're the only ones using the electricity in our house. However, sometimes faulty wiring or dishonest behavior can leave you on the hook for your neighbor's power needs.
As reddit user TrojanBunny explains, shared buildings can sometimes be wired in such a way that even though electricity is used outside your home, you're the one it's billed to. To find out if this is happening to you, turn off everything in your house at the circuit breaker, then watch your meter:
One of the easiest ways to see if someone else has tapped into your power (common in multi unit dwellings) is to look at your electricity meter before and after you shut everything off using your units circuit breaker. If the dial is still spinning at a significant speed, you could be a victim of electricity theft.
This could be malicious or it could be as simple as your unit paying for the lights in the staircase. Either way, you should know what you're paying for.
Solving the problem may be a bit more complicated, depending on where it's coming from. If you're renting, however, it is usually the landlord's responsibility to get wiring issues sorted, so you don't have to worry too much about the cost of repairs. And finding the source can save you plenty of money over the long run.
