If anything shouldn’t be taken for granted, it’s Information Security Management

It was one of our usual off-the-record discussions when I spoke with network admin and asked about the regular password change set up on the system. And, the answer included words like “my opinion,” “...

Watch Out for Unnecessary Treatments at the Dentist

Watch Out for Unnecessary Treatments at the Dentist

We all know that you should see a dentist twice a year for basic cleanings. If you regularly brush and floss, you may not need other dental work. Dentists can't increase their income doing just basic cleanings. Some practices are trying to up sell you into procedures you may not need.

Over at Mother Jones they examine the "creative diagnosis" some dentists come up with. These diagnoses require thousands of dollars of treatment without warning. Second opinions by mainstream dentists find nothing wrong and no treatment necessary.

Some dentists are on the level and only suggest treatments in your best interest. Mother Jones has some things to watch out for:

beware of specials: That laser dentistry and whitening package may be a ploy to get you in the door so the practice can upsell you on more-profitable procedures. Van Dyk also advises caution if your dentist insists on replacing all your old fillings or always recommends crowns instead of fillings. And look out for excessive X-rays: The ADA says healthy patients need a full set (14 to 22) every two years at the most. If your dentist recommends a special "cone-beam" X-ray, get a second opinion, since, along with a 3-D picture of your mouth, it delivers a dose of radiation up to 18 times that of a traditional dental X-ray.

Your best line of defense is always a second opinion before an expensive or invasive treatment

Make Your Commute More Tolerable with a Little Mindfulness

Make Your Commute More Tolerable with a Little Mindfulness

If you've got a long commute to work, you probably try to distract yourself. You might listen to music or an audiobook. Trying mindfulness when you commute might make your commute better and improve your job skills.

The Harvard Business Review looked at the benefits of starting your drive to work with a mindfulness practice:

To use your daily driving commute to help you practice conscious thinking and improve your mindfulness, start by getting into the car and acknowledging the intention that you aspire to be mindful during the commute. Take a few deep breaths. Once buckled up, but before you start to drive, become aware of your body. Feel your hands on the steering wheel, the contour of your body on the seat, your foot on the pedal. Make an effort to be aware of the body and feel present. Start to drive and notice that you are "looking" as you drive: through your windshield, into your mirrors. Now become aware that you are "listening." Notice the sounds you hear.

The idea is that you are continuously aware of three things: your body, what you see, and what you hear. This is what it is to be mindfully present as you drive. Do your best to stay present for the entire commute.

Set your phone to do-not-disturb and keep your focus on your driving. If your focus waivers, gently bring it back to the drive. Instead of arriving to work stressed, you'll arrive aware and ready for the day.

Sync Solver Brings Your Fitbit Data to Apple’s Healthkit

Sync Solver Brings Your Fitbit Data to Apple’s Healthkit

iOS: We've covered some of the apps that send data to iOS 8's Healthkit. Fitbit doesn't directly talk to Healthkit. Sync Solver fixes that problem.

After you install the app, it syncs in the background once a day to Healthkit. Fitbit's API doesn't allow continuously syncing like the Fitbit app does. If you have an iPhone 5S or higher you'll need to tweak Healthkit to prevent recording steps twice.

Remove Your Data from Tons of "People Search Engines" with This List

Search engines like Pipl allow you to find information on just about anyone. If you'd like to get your information removed, Computerworld has a giant list of opt-out links for the most popular sites.

Each service has different rules for opting out, and they don't make it easy to find the instructions. Removing your information may take some work, but you'll be safer in the long run. If you do opt-out, run a search a month or so later and see if they honored your request.
