Last night, I set about brutalizing some pumpkins. First, I purchased the pumpkins. Next, I stopped by the dollar store to get a little kit to carve them up. The kit cost a mere 3% of what my three pumpkins had run me, so I was grateful for a deal. When I got home, I got to work, sawing into the top of one of my big squashes (for carving) and completely ripping apart another (for baking). Without thinking about it, I used a giant kitchen knife to get this done. I should have stuck with that approach because soon enough, the stupid little scoop that came in the kit had broken deep inside the pumpkin I wanted to carve and I couldn’t see well enough into the dark, guts-filled cavern to remove all the bits. That was tragic, since I like to bake with those bits, too, and it meant I spent way too long last night straining and rummaging through stringy guts to make sure no one who consumed my cookies was inadvertently eating slivers of plastic scoop.

Do not get a little kit. Do this instead.

Option one: a big spoon

The guts I was able to scoop out with a metal spoon.

After my little scoop broke apart, I scrambled to find something that could help me continue on my quest to de-gut my pumpkin. I found a big metal spoon and got to work—and it went way smoother than it had been with the plastic scoop. Overall, I recommend a metal spoon for getting the stringy bits, seeds, and inner gunk out of a pumpkin with ease. This works for carving and baking, as I like to use the stringy guts in the puree I make out of pumpkin rinds, utilizing even the discarded elements of my carving pumpkins.

Option two: a bigger kit

As a dedicated dollar-store patron, I didn’t realize you could get big kits, too, but Lifehacker senior health editor Beth Skwarecki educated me this morning, suggesting that anyone who wants to use a kit should get one like this. She says the bigger scoop is sturdier and more reliable, and the larger knives work well, too. She called them “game changers.” Plus, they’re relatively inexpensive: The kit linked above is just $4.97, so it’s not that much more costly than using the $1 mini-kit.

Option three: a mixer

Just like you can use power tools to carve your pumpkins, you can use them to scoop out your pumpkin guts. Attach a paint mixer or even a kitchen mixer to a drill, stick that deep in the pumpkin, and let the electric motor do all the work. Below is a video from Ace Hardware showing how that’s done.

There are a lot of notation apps out there that will happily take both your time and money, but you don’t need to look far for such an app: These days, Google Keep is good enough to make do for simple note taking and writing. The company recently updated the app to support version history (thank goodness), and now allows you to format text within a note.

Rich text formatting was one missing feature that made Google Keep a less appealing option than other notation apps. For quick notes, sure: Who cares if all the text looks the same. But when you’re trying to organize your thoughts in a careful, easy to reference document, you want the option to create headers, or add emphasis with bolding, italicizing, and underlining.

The company has been slowly rolling out text formatting options to users over the last few months. Originally, the feature only worked with new notes, but now, you should be able to retroactively format the text of older notes as well. At this time, the feature only works on the Android version of Google Keep, so you won’t be able to adjust the formatting of notes on the iOS or web apps versions.

How to format text in Google Keep

To start, make sure your Keep app is fully updated, then open it. If prompted, refresh the app to activate the latest features. Next, start a new note, or open an existing one, then tap the new “A” button that appears. (You may see a pop-up highlighting the feature the first time you use it.)

You can use any of the options that appear here to adjust your text, from H1 and H2 headers, to bold (B), italicize (I), and underline (U). There’s even an option to remove any formatting you’ve applied to text at the end of this tool bar.

The new M2 chip was released last summer to wide acclaim, and now the 2022 M2 MacBook Air is getting a great discount (by Apple standards). The laptop’s price dropped to $899 (normally $1,099) at Best Buy. This is cheaper than any prize Amazon has seen, according to Camelcamelcamel, and it matches Best Buy’s lowest price during the October Prime Day sale, according to Honey’s price history. This price is what the refurbished M2 MacBook Airs sell for and is the lowest you’ll find at any other major retailer.

You’re getting Apple’s best ultra-portable laptop

If you’re looking for a laptop that’s portable, reliable, and can keep up with your busy multitasking schedule, then consider this 2022 M2 MacBook Air. It comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage and has up to 18 hours of battery life. PCMag called this laptop “Apple’s best ultraportable laptop yet,” noting its bright, vivid display, slim design, and the better performance the M2 chip offers.

The 2022 M2 MacBook Air dropped to $1,099 with the release of the 15-inch earlier this summer. With the new discount to $899, it brings it to just $50 more than the 13-inch M1 2020 MacBook Air, rendering the older model redundant. PCMag also did a head-to-head with the 2022 M2 Apple MacBook Pro with the 2022 M2 MacBook Air coming out on top for its portability.

This laptop is not for everyone, however. The 8GB of RAM are soldered—if you feel like the RAM is not enough to handle your workload, you’ll be out of luck since you won’t be able to expand it. You can always extend the 256GB of internal space with a external hard drive, though. For most people though, 8GB of RAM will give you enough memory to do photo and video editing and do some mid-range gaming.

Problems with your gutters can be frustrating: Loud drips, water collecting in places it shouldn’t, and water taking an unplanned path, which can cause damage and make rainstorms more trouble than they need to be. While some issues with your gutters require professional help, others can be solved simply yourself with just a few simple tools. Here’s what you need to know.

Use a slip joint

If your gutters have a split where water is leaking out in the middle instead of going down the downspout, using a slip joint to attach a replacement section of gutter is a repair you can do yourself. The slip joint is placed on the outside of the existing gutter piece to join two pieces of gutter together. Hanging a new section of gutter to replace the damaged, leaking piece and then using a slip joint on the seam is as simple as sliding it over the seam and using sealant to hold it together.

Replace a gutter section

If there’s a dent or a buckle in your seamless gutter, rather than replacing the whole thing, you can cut the affected part out with a pair of shears and replace a smaller section. A ten foot section of gutter is around $7 and can be cut to fit a damaged section. Measure the section you need to replace and then cut a section of replacement gutter to that length. Then, use a slip joint mentioned above at each end, and some gutter hangers to attach the repair section.

Use gutter hangers

If your gutters have areas that are sagging or pulling away from the roof, they might be attached with spikes or nails. Newer gutters are usually attached using screws and brackets known as gutter hangers. Reattaching your gutter to the roof using brackets and screws can solve the problem of the gutter pulling away from the house, allowing water to run down the roof behind the gutter. For this repair, you’ll need a drill with a quarter-inch nut driver attachment to fit the screws. Using the brackets will allow for a stronger connection between the gutter and the roof.

Change the slope of your gutter or add a downspout

Sometimes, the slope of your gutter can cause water to collect along the middle of the run. If this happens, you can either use some gutter hangers to raise the middle of the gutter up just a little bit to cause a slope towards the downspout, or you can choose to add a downspout, if it makes sense. Installing what’s known as a drop outlet to allow water to flow into a downspout is similar to repairing a section of damaged gutter. Measure the width of the drop outlet and cut away the section of gutter you want to attach it to. Then use your gutter hangers and one slip joint at each seam to attach it to the edge of the roof. Add your section of downspout below the drop outlet to complete the repair.

Seal the joints

If there are joints between sections of your gutter or between components that have become leaky, you can repair them using sealant. Sometimes, the sealant can get worn out over time, so it might be that the existing seal is just eroded if there’s no damage to the gutter around the seam where the leak is occurring. If that’s the case, clean off the area around the seam and make sure it’s dry. Then apply a sealant that’s made for gutter repairs to the seam, making sure to allow it to run into any nooks and crannies.

If you’re looking for the Connections answer for Monday, October 23, 2023, read on—I’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solutions to all four categories. Along the way, I’ll explain the meanings of the trickier words and we’ll learn how everything fits together. Beware, there are spoilers below for October 23, NYT Connections #134! Read on if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Connections game.

If you want an easy way to come back to our Connections hints every day, bookmark this page. You can also find our past hints there as well, in case you want to know what you missed in a previous puzzle.

Below, I’ll give you some oblique hints at today’s Connections answers. And further down the page, I’ll reveal the themes and the answers. Scroll slowly and take just the hints you need!

Does today’s Connections game require any special knowledge?

Nothing specialized, except perhaps for one phone setting that I have on my iPhone but that my husband, an Android user, wasn’t aware of. (He does have it, though; he just never noticed.)

Hints for the themes in today’s Connections puzzle

Here are some spoiler-free hints for the groupings in today’s Connections:

  • Yellow category - Oh great, it’s a call.
  • Green category - Just do it!
  • Blue category - A crush.
  • Purple category - Not easy! (Yes, that’s the hint, not a meta-comment.)

Does today’s Connections game involve any wordplay?

There’s a fill-in-the-blank for purple again today. The rest are all grouped by meaning, although there’s plenty of ambiguity to keep you guessing.

Ready to hear the answers? Keep scrolling if you want a little more help.

BEWARE: Spoilers follow for today’s Connections puzzle!

We’re about to give away some of the answers. Scroll slowly if you don’t want the whole thing spoiled. (The full solution is a bit further down.)

What are the ambiguous words in today’s Connections?

  • VIBE can be short for VIBRATE, but those two words are in different categories today. Think of VIBEs as in FEELINGS.
  • A SPUR is an attachment on your boot that you can use when riding a horse, or the metaphor of SPURring someone into action.
  • FOCUS can be another word for your narrow attention to a project, something like your DRIVE. It’s also a setting on a camera, a concept in optics, and a feature on your phone to minimize distractions while you are busy.
  • There is a band called The KNOCKS, but when I see that word in the plural, I can’t help but think of people who jokingly say their alma mater is the “school of hard KNOCKS.”

What are the categories in today’s Connections?

  • Yellow: CELL PHONE MODES
  • Green: IMPEL
  • Blue: ROMANTIC BEGINNINGS
  • Purple: HARD ____

DOUBLE BEWARE: THE SOLUTION IS BELOW

Ready to learn the answers to today’s Connections puzzle? I give them all away below.

What are the yellow words in today’s Connections?

The yellow grouping is considered to be the most straightforward. The theme for today’s yellow group is CELL PHONE MODES and the words are: FOCUS, RING, SILENT, VIBRATE.

What are the green words in today’s Connections?

The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today’s green category is IMPEL and the words are: DRIVE, INSPIRE, MOTIVATE, SPUR.

What are the blue words in today’s Connections?

The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today’s blue category is ROMANTIC BEGINNINGS and the words are: CONNECTION, FEELINGS, SPARK, VIBE.

What are the purple words in today’s Connections?

The purple grouping is considered to be the hardest. The theme for today’s purple category is HARD ____ and the words are: CANDY, COPY, KNOCKS, SELTZER.

How I solved today’s Connections

I stared at this grid a long time, utterly lost at first, then almost getting a few groupings. RING, VIBRATE, and SILENT are all phone settings, but I couldn’t figure out the fourth. (Are you in a “do not disturb” FOCUS? Or perhaps DRIVE mode? Or does the call make a CONNECTION?)

I also saw “hard ___” at this point, but had too many options: hard CANDY, hard FEELINGS, hard SELTZER, hard KNOCKS, hard DRIVE, hard COPY.

So my first guess was SPUR, SPARK, MOTIVATE, and INSPIRE. One away! Well then, maybe SPARK goes with FEELINGS, DRIVE, and CONNECTION. 🟦 So what goes with SPUR, MOTIVATE, and INSPIRE? Let’s try DRIVE. That’s another hit. 🟩

Now we’re getting somewhere. There are only four “hard” things left: CANDY, SELTZER, KNOCKS, and COPY. 🟪 That leaves four ways your phone can respond to a call: RING, VIBRATE, SILENT, or quietly ignoring it because you are in FOCUS mode. 🟨

How to play Connections

I have a full guide to playing Connections, but here’s a refresher on the rules:

First, find the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Crossword app. You’ll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your job is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (for example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather) but sometimes there is wordplay involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on).

Select four items and hit the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you’ll get a chance to try again.

You win when you’ve correctly identified all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed.

How to win Connections

The most important thing to know to win Connections is that the groupings are designed to be tricky. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle seemed to include six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don’t hit “submit” until you’ve confirmed that your group of four contains only those four things.

If you’re stuck, another strategy is to look at the words that seem to have no connection to the others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is the painting nicknamed “Whistler’s Mother,” you might be on to something. When I solved that one, I ended up googling whether there was a painter named Close, because Close didn’t fit any of the obvious themes, either.

Another way to win when you’re stuck is, obviously, to read a few helpful hints–which is why we share these pointers every day. Check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!
