Copy Me That Is a Free, Excellent Meal Planner That Works on Every Device

Some of the best meal planning apps are no longer available and others aren’t free. Copy Me That is an awesome alternative, combining recipe management, meal planning, and shopping list generation.

Browser extensions and mobile browser buttons let you import recipes from any site. One of the nice things about the import is it automatically selects the important parts of the recipe and unchecks the unnecessary ones (such as grocery shopping links some sites add into their recipes), and you can tag, edit, rename, or insert a new photo for each recipe. You can also create your own recipes here or import ones from the Copy Me That community.

The shopping list is basically what you’d expect: a checklist of ingredients generated by the recipes you select. You can view the list by food category or by recipe.

The meal planner is dead simple to use. Just select the recipe from your queue and choose the date from the weekly view. You can add notes to each date and add ingredients for the recipes to your shopping list from here. Unfortunately, the weekly view is fixed—you can’t see, say, Friday to next Friday (although you can choose the start of the week as either Saturday, Sunday, or Monday)—and there’s no monthly view.

Still, if you’re looking for a free (and ad-free) meal planner, give Copy Me That a look.

The classic French dish ratatouille usually just looks like a random mix of sauteed vegetables in a pan. Here’s how to make a version of ratatouille that looks so good you’d think it came right out of the Pixar animated movie with the same name.

In the Pixar movie Ratatouille, there’s a scene where Remy the rat takes a common “peasant dish” to a new level and wows a notorious food critic. This handy video from the ChefSteps YouTube channel shows you how to make that very same dish so you can wow your friends and family. Ratatouille is simple and cheap to make, but if you use this fancy method of cooking the ingredients you’ll elevate your simple dish to “confit byaldi.”All you need are some tomatoes, zucchini, yellow zucchini, eggplant, onion, red bell peppers, garlic, and a way to thinly slice all your vegetables. When you’re all done, you’ll have a meal that almost looks too good to eat. Oh, and it will taste pretty good too.

How Lenient Return Policies Trick You Into Keeping Stuff You Don't Want

There are plenty of stores out there with great return policies. Some are so good you can basically rent stuff from their stores. If you’re not careful, however, those lenient return polices can actually trick your brain into holding onto items you don’t actually want.

In a recent meta-study (or study of studies) published in the Journal of Retailing, researchers found that stores with return policies usually see a decent increase in purchases and a small increase in returns. That’s not too surprising, but the study also suggests that customers who shop at stores with long-term return policies are less likely to ever return anything. Why? You don’t worry about returning an item because the deadline is so far off. You think to yourself, “I have time, I’ll get to that later.” The longer you wait, however, you also run the risk of experiencing the “endowment effect,” where you start to take ownership of an item even if you don’t necessarily want it.

Lastly, you can overthink the actual process of returning an item to the store. As Melissa Dahl at The Science of Us explains, the return process can be awkward, tedious, and almost feels like you’re admitting failure to someone. The longer you wait, the more you build the experience up in your head and decide returning it just isn’t worth the effort. If you want to return something, don’t take advantage of a lenient policy. Return the item as soon as you can.

Build Your Own Massive LED Video Screen Powered by Arduino

Sometimes, you just want to go big. Case in point, Make’s guide to make your gigantic, Jumbotron-esque LED video screen.

The project here is powered by a Teensy microcontroller, a bunch of LED strips, and a handful of other parts. Once you complete the project, you can hang your screen just about anywhere you want and use it as a display for your computer. You’re not going to get a high quality image by any means, but that doesn’t make it any less fun to make. Head over to Make for the full guide and parts list.
